Aiming High is the Forum’s Community Mentoring Project supporting BME school children. The project works in over 20 primary and secondary schools across Hertfordshire, supporting BME children in Years 3 to 8. The project covers the Government’s five Every Child Matters outcomes.
The Forum’s five learning mentors provide regular one-to-one support, in the form of hour long sessions, to over 50 BME children at their schools every week. The mentors work with BME children to overcome their barriers to learning and raise their achievement in school. These barriers can include behaviour difficulties, low self-esteem, social problems and school attendance issues. The mentors work through these issues providing advice, guidance and support and acting as a positive role model for the children they work with.
The project has received positive feedback from schools, families and children. Aiming High was chosen to be studied as part of a county wide JAR (Joint Area Review) inspection and was identified as a ‘Good targeted action’ which has a ‘positive effect on increasing the self esteem, confidence and attitudes and behaviours’ of the children and young people we work with.
Some new initiatives also under the NHMEF children's services includes a new Saturday School which provides English and Math tuition to children in years 3-7 every Saturday afternoon at Unity House. If you are interested in the project please contact your school or the Forum.
